2. You and your Primary opponents are running for an open U.S. Senate seat. You both are well experienced in the political world. Define your strengths and why you would better serve in this position than your Republican opponent.

For 25 years, Joe Heck has served Nevada as a doctor, small business owner, legislator, and soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve. He served three tours of active duty, including Iraq. As a brigadier general, he clearly sees the threat to national security presented by radical Islamic terrorism and is a leader who knows what it takes to confront it. Dr. Heck also understands the sacrifices of our veterans and their families, because he is one. Nevada needs a voice in the U.S. Senate who understands these challenges. Dr. Heck dedicated his life to serving our country and state. He will not stand by while evil forces use terror to threaten our lives and our values. That is why he wants to keep America strong, so the fight over there does not come over here.

Dr. Heck knows how to identify problems and provide solutions because he started and operated a small business. That is a lesson Washington should learn. he sees a Nevada of unlimited opportunity with better jobs, higher wages, and the chance to rise as far as the path will take us. He knows the importance of having a job, because his father was out of work. In Congress, Dr. Heck pushed to create jobs by cutting big government and streamlining workforce training programs. He knows what it is like to suffer the stress of losing a home because his family almost lost theirs. That is why Joe has helped families threatened by foreclosure.

He was a responder at Ground Zero and served families in Nevada as an emergency room doctor, search and rescue team member, and tactical physician with the LVMPD SWAT team. Dr. Heck knows the pain families feel when a loved one is sick, because he is a physician. When his father needed emergency surgery, Medicare covered him. That is why Joe will protect Medicare and Social Security and preserve it for future generations.

3. Would you consider your political ideology different than that of your opponent?

Dr. Joe Heck is a common sense conservative Republican who breaks through Washington gridlock to get bills passed and signed into law:

His Three Kids Mine Act allows for clean-up and redevelopment of a toxic mine site at no cost to taxpayers. It is expected to create as many as 3,000 new jobs.

His Hoover Power Allocation Act protects and ensures Nevada’s access to stable, low cost and clean hydro power until 2067.

His Stolen Valor Act protects the honor of military awards, and the men and women who earn them, by making it a crime to knowingly benefit from misrepresenting the receipt of certain military medals.

His Enhancing Services for Runaway and Homeless Victims of Youth Trafficking Act provides increased support to runaway and homeless youth who are victims of human trafficking.

His Vulnerable Veterans Housing Reform Act passed the U.S. House and would help reduce veteran homelessness.

Dr. Heck’s Jobs Originated through Launching Travel or J.O.L.T. Act, which earned broad bipartisan support, would create an estimated 1.2 million jobs nationwide and add as much as $860 billion to our economy.

His Creating Access to Residency Education or CARE Act would establish a $25 million grant program so states like Nevada can attract more medical residents.

4. Explain your position in regards to:

  • Immigration issues  – Dr. Heck believes our immigration system is broken and needs reform, which should be debated and voted on by Congress. Securing our borders is a top priority. We must also eliminate incentives for individuals to come here without following the legal path. He supports an improved employment eligibility verification (E-Verify) system. We must update our visa system to allow those with skills or knowledge necessary for our economy to immigrate. He does not support amnesty.
  • Public lands issuesMore than 86% of Nevada is controlled by the federal government — the highest of any state. Dr. Heck supports legislation to give Nevadans greater local control of their land as opposed to bureaucrats who are 2,500 miles away. Communities across Nevada cannot plan for their most basic needs, from housing to economic development, without an act of Congress. There is a proven model for respecting both conservation and the economy. The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act enabled Las Vegas to grow while providing revenue for education, water and conservation. He believes communities throughout Nevada that are trapped by public lands deserve a similar opportunity for self-determination, economic development and community-driven conservation.
  • Obamacare As an emergency room physician who treated Nevadans from all walks of life, Dr. Heck has seen what works and what doesn’t. Premium increases on top of exorbitant deductibles make the “Affordable Care Act” anything but affordable. That is why he introduced and cosponsored legislation with the GOP Doctors Caucus to fully repeal the unsustainable ACA and start over with patient-centered solutions including the interstate purchase of insurance, individual health pools, expanded health savings accounts, tax credits for the purchase of coverage, and lawsuit abuse reforms to reduce the costly practice of defensive medicine. By defending the status quo and offering no solutions, ACA proponents put Washington ahead of Nevadans and their doctors.
  • The minimum wage issue – from a national perspective  – As a former small business owner, Dr. Heck supports cutting job-killing government red tape to create more jobs and better wages. The Affordable Care Act, for which has killed hours and turned many Nevadans into part time employees. Additional Washington-knows best policies will kill more hours and jobs.

5. As a U.S. Senator, what do you believe will be your greatest challenges? How will you address them?

Dr. Heck wants to restore our nation to its rightful position on the global stage as the world’s sole superpower, continue efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, support pro-growth tax policies. He will address these issues as he has in the House by being a workhorse and not a show horse.

6. During a campaign season, many accusations/assertions are made by your opponents. Have there been any thus far that you feel are inaccurate or unfair that you would like to respond to?

Dr. Heck’s record of service and accomplishments speak for themselves. He is an honorable man.

One comment on “Dr. Joe Heck – Republican candidate U.S. Senate
  1. Thomas Heck says:

EDITOR’S NOTE: This “Comment” was posted by another Republican candidate in the District 3 Congressional race. In doing my interviews, I did not include all Republican candidates – I included only Dr. Joe Hecht and Sharron Angle.

    1. Please post a short personal resume:
Tom Heck is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He served 22 years in the Air Force from which he retired in 1998 after earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring from the military, Tom continued to serve in various roles including as a Town Manager, engineering, planning, and a consultant for various communities. He also ran the logistics for the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Test Site in Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands.

Tom graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree, in General Studies in 1977. He received his Masters of Science Degree, in Public Administration, from Troy State University in 1986; an Educational Specialist Degree in Human Resource Development from George Washington University in 1991; and a Masters in Business Administration from Pepperdine University in 1999.
    2. You and your Primary opponents are running for an open U.S. Senate seat. You both are well experienced in the political world. Define your strengths and why you would better serve in this position than your Republican opponent.
Similar to what Ronald Reagan said about age — Tom Heck is not going to make a political issue about my opponents limited vision because they are career politicians. Nevadans are angry that their politicians don’t listen to them. Americans are angry about the direction of the country, overspending, lack of job creation, the poor economy, ever increasing taxes, our military’s limited capability, and our compromised safety at home and abroad.
We can no longer afford to vote in career politicians who talk one way and vote another (check out their voting record on conservativereview.com). Politicians who spend more time trying to get reelected than doing their job, claiming to be conservative, while consistently voting with the liberals, thinking Nevadans won’t notice the betrayal must not be returned to office!
Tom’s strengths are that he is NOT a career politician. He plans to only run for one term. Tom has extensive leadership experience in the military and in the private sector. He worked for four municipalities, a county, a consulting firm and ran the logistics for the DOD Ballistic Missile Defense program in Kwajalein Atoll. Noteworthy, while spending 22 years on active duty in the Air Force, Tom also obtained three graduate degrees — don’t you want someone really smart going to the US Senate?
But most importantly, as a “Superior Candidate”, Tom ran some big operations as opposed to just appropriating funding or passing laws. He actually was an “Operator” and someone who knows how things work and how to get things done in the real world.
    3. Would you consider your political ideology different than that of your opponent?
Yes, as a “Superior Candidate” unlike the “Major” opponents, Tom Heck is a real conservative who will actually vote that way. See his opponents voting record on conservativereview.com. He’s not a move along and get along kind of guy. Tom believes in truth telling about our country’s issues and problems. He does not think we can afford to dance around issues anymore. Tom says we need to take them head on; determine the problem (not the symptom) and come up with a solution. Washington’s solution is to always throw more money at the problem and that is not always the best answer. Once we have a solution, we need to make sure we measure outcomes and sunset the program/solutions if they do not meet the stipulated measures. Ask yourself how many politician actually vote to rescind laws or cancel programs. The answer: None!
    4. Explain your position in regards to:
Immigration Issues: I do not support a path to citizenship for people who are currently in America illegally any differently than I would support any violation of our current immigration laws by people who are foreign born and wish to become American citizens.
In America, one is expected to obey our laws as we enjoy the privileges of living here and the freedoms this status bestows on all of us. People who violate our laws to get into America should not be provided any additional accommodations to becoming American citizens; in fact, I believe people who break our laws to enter our country should be sent to the end of the line for American citizenship and start over like everyone else wanting to achieve American citizenship. I also believe the fact that these people violated our laws should be a serious consideration at the time their legitimate application for citizenship is considered.
Many Americans are currently under the mistaken notion that we need immigration reform because we have so many people here illegally. The reality is that we have a plethora of laws regarding immigration which are simply not enforced for political reasons. We all understand why, after almost 200 years, many Americans believe our immigration laws are broken. This belief system is the result of Americans being lied to about what is needed with regard to immigration rather than simply enforcement of our current laws. The President and other senior government officials take an oath to defend the constitution and enforce our country’s laws, the same oath I took as a career Air Force Officer; however, unlike me and others who have served our country, there are far too many elected government officials, including our President, who are violating this oath. We need leaders that understand America is a country of laws and who are committed to honoring and holding all of us accountable to comply with these laws. I am such a leader.

Public Lands Issues: Currently, public federal lands are managed by the federal government, subject to congressional oversight, to serve the best interests of all Americans. I believe there may be some limited circumstances which necessitates a position for turning these lands over to the states however, these circumstances, in my opinion, are the exception rather than the rule.
Federal lands are meant to serve the best interests of all Americans, such as our National Parks. We must ask ourselves, in every instance in which we deliberate the value of federal oversight, whether we care about only what is in the best interests of individuals or individual states or is our concern that of the United States and its people as a whole?
The question of who should have authority over federal public lands is both complex and complicated and one which needs debate for every instance in which the question is posed. My position is that we much not ignore this debate but, rather, we must embrace it and we must encourage and consider the stake each American bears and holds in its outcome, for each individual state and for each and every American.
Obamacare: This law should be repealed in its entirety. We must also remove government requirements and restrictions to selling healthcare across the state lines. This one size plan fits all is unacceptable and, it is not working. Healthcare should be like car insurance and left to the individual to decide what type policy they want. Some may want only catastrophic care, others may want a more moderate coverage policy and some may want the minimal health insurance coverage. Our nation was founded on freedom of choice, let’s give Americans that freedom to decide and let the free market drive the policy by ending all these government regulations.
Minimum Wage: This is another free market issue. Some believe these types of jobs are stepping stones for high school and college students as well as people who need supplemental income. Forcing the minimum ways skews the free market and, when that happens, businesses close and prices go up. The minimum wage was recently increased in Seattle and a large number of restaurants closed. Government needs to stop regulating the free markets and forcing short sighted regulations which hurt our economy and the people who are most vulnerable to being hurt by these regulations (i.e., mostly the poor).

    5. As a U.S. Senator, what do you believe will be your greatest challenges? How will you address them?
Getting Obamacare repealed. Securing our borders. Getting career politicians to vote conservative. Stop the “move along to get along” pandering in Washington by career politicians. Strengthening our military and getting politics out of the military leadership that was instilled by the Obama Administration — life or death decisions for America’s finest should not rely on political whim or will. All of these issues must be addressed by principled leaders who tell the truth, always do the next right thing regardless of the political fall-out, and who know how to engage other stakeholders (i.e., fellow elected officials and, most importantly, fellow citizens) to get the job done. I am such a leader.

    6. During a campaign season, many accusations/assertions are made by your opponents. Have there been any thus far that you feel are inaccurate or unfair that you would like to respond to?
Yes, the assertion that there are only two major candidates. I am not sure what that means or what the litmus test is to be considered a “major candidate” for the Republican Party. I would suggest that looking at the “Major Candidates’” voting records would be quite telling. Check conservativereview.com. Once you do that you will find that Tom Heck is the real conservative candidate for US Senate and the more superior one as well!

    7. Please use this space to elaborate on any issue not covered above:
    Why is Tom SAD?
Tom Heck is saddened by the political leadership, in both Republican and Democratic establishments, with their crony capitalism funding career politicians who ignore the voters! Tom understands that Nevadans are angry their elected officials don’t listen to them. They’re angry about the direction of the country:
Overspending Limited job-creation Poor economy Ever-increasing taxes Weak military Compromised national security
We can no longer afford to vote in career Republicans who talk one way and vote another. Nor can we tolerate politicians who spend more time trying to get reelected than doing their job. Politicians, who claim to be conservative Republicans, have consistently voted with liberals, thinking Nevadans wouldn’t notice the betrayal!
All this makes Tom SAD! And Tom understands Nevadans are SAD too……rightfully so, angry at the dismal failure of establishment politicians!
Tom’s strength is his leadership ability. That is totally opposite of a career politician. He plans to campaign for only one-term. Tom has extensive leadership experience from serving in the military for 22-years, in local governments, a consulting firm, and running logistics for the Reagan Ballistic Missile Test site in Kwajalein Atoll. And while on active duty, Tom obtained three graduate degrees.
But most importantly, Tom ran some big operations as opposed to just appropriating funding or passing laws. He was actually an “Operator,” someone who knows how things work and how to get things done in the real world.
Vote for “SAD Tom” in the June 14, 2016 primary and make Tom and your fellow Nevadans happy again.
