In response to rumors: This is a detention basin, not a dam
Dayton Valley Road detention pond issue
Approximately 2:00pm, Tuesday 2/21
According to Lyon County Manager Jeff Page, “there has been NO dam failure. A storm water retention basin located south west of Dayton Valley Road is full and over flowing into drainages. Currently there are no homes or property threatened. There is potential that this could change in the next few hours.”
A detention basin is either an entirely or partially manmade basin – or in some instances, a naturally formed basin, in the ground – used to retain runoff waters during times of heavy moisture events. It is not a dam holding water behind it above surrounding areas, but they can certainly fill and overflow the edges on occassion – resulting in area flooding.
